Taalio ("the app", "we", "us") is a Dutch vocabulary learning app operated by Taalio, a sole proprietorship registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) under number 83959068, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. Taalio is local-first by design — most of what you do in the app never leaves your device.
Vocabulary & learning data (stored only on your device). Words you add, translations, example sentences, your scores, and session history are stored locally on your device using on-device storage. We do not operate a server or database that stores this data, and we cannot see it.
Anonymous usage analytics. We use PostHog, a product analytics service, to understand how the app is used — for example, app opens, session counts, which features are used, and notification opt-in rates. These events are tied to an anonymous, randomly generated device identifier, not to your name, email, or any account (Taalio does not have user accounts or sign-in). Standard technical data such as device model, OS version, and app version may be collected alongside these events.
Content sent for AI processing. Two features send small amounts of content to third-party providers in order to work:
Our proxy server (hosted on Cloudflare) forwards these requests without storing them; it exists only to keep API credentials off your device. Requests are securely transmitted to DeepL and OpenAI solely to provide translation and sentence-grading features. Those services process data according to their own privacy policies, linked below.
Notifications. If you enable reminders, they are scheduled entirely on your device. We do not use push notifications, and no notification token or schedule is ever sent to a server.

Your vocabulary and progress data lives only on your device for as long as the app is installed. Removing the app generally deletes this data, although a copy may remain in device backups you've enabled (such as iCloud or iTunes/Finder backups), which are created and managed by Apple, not by us. Anonymous analytics events are retained by PostHog according to their standard retention settings.
Legal basis for processing. We process anonymous analytics under our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the app. We process translation and sentence-grading requests only when you actively choose to use those features.
If you are located in the EU/EEA, you may have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access, rectify, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your data, and the right to data portability. Because Taalio does not collect data tied to your identity (no accounts, no name, no email address), most of these rights apply to the limited, anonymous analytics data described in Section 1. Taalio is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
If you use Taalio outside your home country, your information (limited to the anonymous analytics and processing described above) may be processed in other countries, including the United States, by the third-party providers listed in Section 3.
